About

Recounting women is a collaboration between Scottish Women’s Aid and local Women’s Aid groups working across Scotland to provide essential refuge and support services to women, children and young people who have experienced domestic abuse.  Since 2016, we have carried out a series of photovoice workshops with women supported by Perthshire Women’s Aid, Glasgow East Women’s Aid and in 2019 with Edinburgh Women’s Aid and Shakti Women’s Aid.

Photovoice is a participatory action research method which has 3 main goals

  • to enable people with limited power to record their concerns

  • to promote critical dialogue and knowledge about important issues

  • to reach policy makers – acting as a catalyst for change

In the workshops women met as a group over several weeks to discuss and map their shared concerns. During these sessions women developed images and text that reflect what they want other people to know about domestic abuse, the impact it has on their lives, and what needs to change. Key themes that consistently emerged are homelessness, poverty, injustice, isolation and the impact of domestic abuse on women’s physical and mental health.
